Introduction

African Centre for Herbal Research, Ilorin otherwise called ACHRI was established in June, 2015 following extensive deliberation by the members of the U6 consortium. U6 consortium was originally an initiative of six African Universities comprising of:

  • Cape Peninsula University of Technology, South Africa
  • University of Eldoret, Kenya
  • Kwara  State University, Malete, Nigeria
  • University of Cape Coast, Ghana
  • University of the Gambia, Banjul, Gambia
  • University of Ilorin, Ilorin, Nigeria

However, the U6 consortium (now U6+ consortium) expanded to accommodate more African institutions which includes:

  • Jaramogi Oginga Odinga University of Sciences and Technology, Kenya
  • University of Calabar, Nigeria
  • University of Abuja, Abuja, Nigeria
  • Federal University of Technology, Akure, Nigeria
  • Vaal University of Technology, South Africa
  • Al-Hikmah University, Nigeria

ACHRI have three main facilities which include:

  • A Research Laboratory
  • A Production Unit
  • A Herbal Organic Research Farm

The research laboratory and production unit are both located within the Central Research Laboratory Complex of the University, while the herbal organic research farm occupying six (6) hectares of land is located close to the dam site of the University of Ilorin, Nigeria. The farm housed various medicinal herbs which are dedicated for advanced researches.

ACHRI Activities

The activities of ACHRI include:

  • Phytochemical characterization of tropical medicinal plants
  • Evaluation of the toxicities of herbs and herbal formulations
  • Determination of safety profile of herbal products
  • Formulation, standardization and production of herbal products from research endeavors
  • Other relevant researches on medicinal floras

Collaborations

As a frontier of knowledge, ACHRI actively collaborates with various departments, institutions and reputable bodies globally to foster translational researches and enlightenment on herbal products.
